Alan Squires: title bid
GOLF:
OLDHAM’S Alan Squires was today bidding for a fourth consecutive English Men’s Seniors Open Championship.
He made history by clinching the coveted title for three years in a row after wins at Carlisle (2010), Northants County (2011) and Aldeburgh (2012).
Squires (pictured) therefore joined Doug Arnold and David Lane as a three-time winner and if he is successful again in Bristol he will equal Roy Smethurst’s record four titles secured in six years between 2000 and 2005.
The competitors will play one round over two courses on the first two days, after which the leading 60 and ties will complete 18 holes at Bristol and Clifton on Friday. The other venue is Long Ashton.
Smethurst again lined-up in the field of 240 golfers aged 55 and over, so too John Jermine, champion in 2008, and Chris Reynolds, who was triumphant in 2009.
