Chronicle winner’s tribute to Jane

“THIS one’s for you, Jane” was the emotional message from women’s Chronicle Cup winner Glynis Jones following her play-off victory at Crompton and Royton.

The local golf scene was stunned by the death of former Werneth lady captain Jane Fletcher (48), a founder member of the Oldham Ladies Golf Association. The High Barn club flew its flag at half-mast in tribute.

Glynis certainly did Jane proud: she held on to a score - in horrid wind and rain - of a four-over net 76 including a seven at the par three 14th where three times she watched the ball roll back towards her.

She kept her composure after a long wait in the clubhouse before last year’s winner Sheila Cooper (Saddleworth) matched the 76 and forced a six-hole play-off.

“I won a best visitor prize here in the mixed event last year, playing with our then vice captain James Buckley, so I was confident I could do well,” said the 54 year old, who lives in Ashton and has been a

member at the Garden Suburb club for eight years.

“This has been a very sad time for our club and I am just glad that we have been able to lift the spirits with a victory,” added Glynis, who received the magnificent, 89-year-old trophy from the Chronicle’s managing editor David Whaley, himself a Werneth member.

The Centenary Plate team prize for the top four scores went to Saddleworth, who won by a single shot, 314 to Oldham’s 315.



JANE Fletcher’s funeral is tomorrow (2.30pm) at St Margaret’s Church, Hollinwood.
