THERE was a photo finish in the Crompton and Royton Seniors Open — with six pairs all recording 39 points!
It was a card play-off to beat all card play-offs, with Ashton duo Mohammed Akram and Peter Haq eventually emerging victorious.
They denied the home side’s Landy Wild and Eric Frier, who had to settle for runners-up spot on the day.
Third place went to Derek Cannon, also of Crompton and Royton, and his partner from Brookdale, Barry Wiltshire.
Next were Robert Grimshaw (Rossendale) and Barry Kershaw (Townley), followed by Anthony Fothergill and Paul Topp (West Bradford), with Ian Brogden and Keith Massey (East Bierley) in sixth.
A TRIPLE bogey seven failed to stop John Grainger from clinching the Cheetham Cup, a major competition at STAMFORD.
The 15-handicapper posted the possible card-wrecker on the notorious stroke one, ‘The Rabbit’ — this after bagging two birdies in his opening three holes.
But Grainger kept his nerve — he also had to play through shoulder-high nettles from a hazard on the 14th — to record a two-shot victory.
He signed for a 79, nett 64, to deny Stephen Lennon and Rob Irving, who both returned nett scores of 66.
WENDY Oliver, with a round of 99-26-73, won the Boswell Cup at Brookdale.
The runner-up, on a card play-off was lady captain Adele Keate, who posted 109-33-76.
