CRICKET: IF a graph was drawn of Adam Young’s batting performances it would feature more peaks and troughs than a trip over the Pyrenees.

The Austerlands skipper has endured an up-and-down season, with four ducks, two single-figure scores, a 39 not out, two knocks in the 60s and, most recently, an unbeaten century.

Before his spectacular late blitz in posting 101 against Saddleworth — his first ton at senior level — Young’s tally was a meagre six runs in three innings.

But with confidence restored, he is targeting a win over Moorside in the last eight of the Tanner Cup tomorrow.

Reflecting on his maiden century, Young said: “I decided to mix up the batting order.

“I came in at number six when we were in trouble at 35 for four. My original thought was to get us to 125, which would be something to bowl at.

“I was going to go for it, anyway, but I still needed 20-odd in the last over to reach my ton and I went six, six, four, dot ball, six.”

After dropping out of the top five in the league after four straight defeats, Young said the players are determined to regain their form.

He added. “We need to score more runs and the players have been putting in extra training.

“I think some of the lads are afraid to play their natural game.”

This is the third meeting between Austerlands, tomorrow’s hosts, and Moorside, in 2013. They will face off for a fourth time at the end of the month in the first round of the Twenty Cup.

As for the other ties, Uppermill play host to Droylsden now Bamford Fieldhouse have decided not to appeal against the league’s decision to throw them out of the competition.

Bamford are still appealing against the league’s three-year Tanner Cup ban from 2014.

Heyside, the holders, are at home to Greenfield, while Hollinwood go to Shaw.

SHAW and Hollinwood will be sick of the sight of each other this weekend as they also meet in the league on Sunday.
The lads from Lime Lane might as well pitch their tents tomorrow night as Holebottom Clough is again the venue.
