WHAT A CATCH . . . Heyside batsman Tony Heaton can hardly believe it as he is caught and bowled by Greenfeld’s Alex Peters.
CRICKET:
DROPPED with the score on four, Richard Baines took his second chance and swept Moorside into the semi-finals of the Tanner Cup at Nursery Fields.
Baines had made 79 from 81 balls which, unluckily for Austerlands, included 13 fours.
It was only after the introduction of spinner Imran Aslam that Baines looked marginally ill at ease. Unfortunately for Austerlands, the Pakistani wasn’t allowed to bowl at both ends.
After they were reduced to 86 for six, the home side would have been reasonably happy to reach 150. But they didn’t use all their 40.5 overs - a sin in this form of cricket.
Moorside were skittled for 127 by Austerlands in the Saturday Whit derby clash three weeks ago. There was never a chance of that occurring here.
After Francis Sutherland and Baines had put on 48 – the former was run out for 17 – Grobler and Baines added 85. After playing his part with the ball with four for 34, South African paid man Grobler made 46 from 32 balls, which featured two sixes and six fours.
His final boundary sealed victory at the start of the 26th over.
STANDING in the way of Moorside and a place in the Tanner Cup final are Hollinwood, who defeated Shaw by 28 runs at Holebottom Clough.
Number five batsman Kashif Khan hit 50 before falling to a superb catch and bowl by Richard Keaveney in the visitors’ 203.
Shakir Hussain and Mohammed Usman, who was promoted from the second team, picked up three wickets apiece, for 26 and 46 runs respectively, as Hollinwood restricted Shaw to 175.
In a game of threes, Fayaz Khan held a trio of catches in the outfield.
Greenfield can look forward to a big payday at Ladhill Lane for the semi-final clash with Uppermill.
Alex Peters’ side moved in to the last four after dumping out holders and league leaders Heyside at Little Hey Street.
Greenfield did the hard work by limiting the hosts to 154. Adam Hayes claimed four for 26.
Peters made 63 in reply as the visitors, who last won the Tanner Cup in 1936, secured a comfortable seven-wicket victory. For Heyside, it was a third defeat in as many matches.
Greenfield's next opponents, Uppermill, are coming to the boil nicely after five wins from their last six games.
Their latest victims, Droylsden, could manage only 103 against the home side's 255 for seven.
