TOP CLASS: Mike Melia is aiming to become the FA and McDonald’s Community Awards Coach of the Year.
Football:
FAILSWORTH football coach Mike Melia is one of several coaches hoping this weekend to be named 2013 FA and McDonald’s Community Awards Coach of the Year.
Staged at the FA’s National Football Centre in Staffordshire, Melia will have his coaching skills put to the test by a top judging panel.
He will be assessed in Sunday by former Manchester United defender and England assistant coach Gary Neville, former England defender Gareth Southgate, FA National Club Development Manager Les Howie, former Manchester United youth coach Eric Harrison and last year’s winner Liam Dart.
Each of the eight nominees will conduct a coaching session with local youngsters in front of the panel. Mike (59), who will represent the North West, said: “I was gobsmacked when I saw the message from the FA. I didn’t even know I’d been nominated. I thought it was a wind-up.
“I’m getting used to the idea now though and I’m not nervous. I’m just going to enjoy the day. I’m really looking forward to it.”
MIke has been with Moston Brook FC for 40 years and is club secretary as well as manager of two of the current youth teams.
United legend Neville said: “Coaches are so important. They teach youngsters the fundamentals of the game and this is where top players are born.
“Mike and the rest of the coaches involved have shown commendable dedication and commitment and fully deserve recognition as regional winners.”
The successful coach will receive the award at Wembley on August 11, ahead of the FA Community Shield.
