HANDOVER: Stamford captain Dave Allen presents the Centenary Vase to Alan Hartle
GOLF:
RHODES Construction pulled of a memorable double with the top two spots at the hugely successful PGA North Pro-Am at Werneth.
Club member Dave Rhodes entered two teams and played in the winning combination that posted a 17-under total of 119 in the two-to-count medal event.
That was a shot clear of the second Rhodes Construction side, while Sun Chemical (120), Crompton and Royton (120), Lucas Fettes (121) and Hydes Brewery (122) made up the minor placings.
The professionals found the tight Werneth course tough with Chris Fricker leading for a considerable part of the day after a modest two-under 66.
Tim Maxwell topped that with a 65 and it was left to Jonathan Cheetham in the last group of the day to post a winning six-under 62 — one shot off the course record set by Bridlington’s Alex Belt in 2009.
A strong wind made conditions difficult for the Centenary Vase, a major competition at Stamford.
Alan Hartle, a stalwart of the club for more than 40 years, came out on top with a round of 81-13-68.
Mike Leigh (81-13-68) was the runner-up, with Barry Dickinson (82-13-69) third-best on the day. The lowest gross score was recorded by Jamie Chadwick, who shot a superb 75-5-70.
ALAN Squires had to settle for fourth place in the Lancashire Seniors’ Championship at Heysham.
Runner-up in the recent English Seniors’ Open, the Oldham member paid the penalty for a first-round, nine-over-par 79.
Squires hit back from his tardy start to post a level par 70, but it wasn’t enough to claw back the deficit. Jeremy Morgan strung together a pair of 72s for a four-over-par total and a one-shot victory.
GRANT Hamerton was three shots behind winner Michael Jones in the De Vere PGA North Region Championship at Herons’ Reach.
The Brookdale assistant professional carded 70 and 69 for a 139 total. Jones, of Royal Liverpool, opened up with a 70 before firing a 66.
