Leaders assert authority

THREE tries proved in vain as Waterhead slipped to a 44-20 loss at home to leaders Wigan St Jude’s in Division One of the National Conference League.
Matthew Barran, Terry Fitzgerald and Fraser Coley went over for Andy Sands’ side who, at one stage, enjoyed an 8-4 lead at Peach Road. Jamie Mayall also landed four goals for Andy Sands’ men.
However, St Jude’s showed why they are favourites for the title. Assuming control at half-time — they were 22-8 to the good — they went on to press home their advantage in the second period.
Paul Pendlebury and Scott Robinson each notched hat-tricks, while Steve King and Gareth Thomas also touched down. The latter also landed half-a-dozen goals.
Shane Tupaea’s first game in charge of SADDLEWORTH RANGERS — he has replaced Emmerson Jackman — ended in defeat as they went down 24-8 at Milford Marlins.
Like Waterhead, Rangers held a narrow advantage for a time, only for the hosts to claim the points.
Danny Turner went in for Rangers and Michael Coates slotted over a couple of goals for an 8-6 lead at the interval, but Rangers were unable to add to their tally in the second period.
Aaron Jones-Bishop (two), Matt Harding and Ryan Oxtoby scored tries for Marlins and Martin Loveridge kicked all four goals.
