Classy Buckley bags coveted prize

BOWLS: CHADDERTON’S Andy Buckley enjoyed a grand day out in Wakefeild, where the Nimble Nook ace won the prestigious Sandel Classic event, collecting a cheque for £1,000 for his skills.

Buckley shrugged off recent back trouble to beat favourite Ryan Clark from Sheffield 21-10 in the final.

Arguably Buckley’s toughest task came in the semi-finals: he came face-to-face with York-based former Oldham star Graeme Wilson, currently the number two player in the game behind Gary Ellis.

Buckley’s deadly accuracy proved pivotal though as the local star edged to a 21-18 victory.

Buckley said: “It’s been a difficult year at times as I’ve been suffering with my back. I’ve had treatment and now that’s over, the form is coming back.

“I was over the moon to win. There was some tough competition but the winners’ cheque was nice.”

TONGE had eight winners in their 11-three win (198-167) at home to Tottington.

They were Jimmy Derby (21-20), Matt Gillies (21-18), Gary Ellis (21-11), Colin Lane (21-10), Chris Cooke (21-18), Darren Griffiths (21-15), Graham Hickey (21-20) and Steve Squire (21-13).

Tonge, who visit Sale next Wednesday, trail leaders St Joseph’s by 11 points, but have a game in hand.

Meanwhile, Hickey is in the running for the league’s “last man standing” prize after winning 11 out of 11 matches so far this season.
