John Newell: to represent Great Britain
BOXING: ROYTON light-heavyweight John Newell has been rewarded for excellent performances with a call-up to the Great Britain squad.
Student Newell (19) impressed the national coaches at a recent training camp in Sheffield and will now jet off to Hungary for a multi nations tournament from September 4-15.
Newell will feature in a nine-strong GB squad, which has been invited to join in the prestigious Laszlo Papp tournament.
Newell, who has been boxing at Ben Lancaster’s Boarshaw Gym since the age of 10, said: “It’s a big thing to be making my debut for Great Britain so I’m really pleased. I must have done well at the training camp.
“I thought I had, to be honest, but it’s still brilliant when you get a phone call to say you’re off to fight in a big tournament abroad.”
