CRICKET: AUSSIE batting sensation Ben Dunk has pledged his allegiance to Royton for another season.

The hard-hitting Tasmanian has lit up the CLL Championship this season with four centuries - the latest a 154 off 96 deliveries in the team’s win at Ashton on Saturday.

Dunk leads the CLL batting averages with 884 runs at 88.4; Royton officials had no hesitation in offering him another contract for 2014, during which the club is likely to be playing Premier Division cricket.

“We are delighted to have secured Ben for next season,” said club captain Denny Hulme.

“His quality is there for all to see, but it’s what Ben has brought to the club off the pitch that's been equally, if not more impressive."

Dunk, enjoying his first taste of English cricket this summer, is delighted to be returning: “I feel really humbled that the club wants me back. They have had some great professionals - but for me it’s more about the people. Those involved in the club and people around town have really made me feel welcome.

“There are heaps of cricket clubs all over the UK I could play for, but I doubt I could find the quality of

person I have at Royton, so with that in mind I can’t wait to get back and spend more time with them.”

JOHN Punchard has been axed as second team captain at the Paddock.
The new man in charge will be wicketkeeper-batsman Matthew England. The club’s cricket committee felt a change was necessary “after some poor results.”

Punchard didn’t play last Saturday and is not in the squad for this weekend. His son Andrew has joined Saddleworth League club Shaw with another Royton player, Paul Clarke.

Punchard senior said: “I don’t want to make any comment other than I am still currently registered with Royton.”
