RUGBY:
OLDHAM St Anne’s returned to winning ways in terrific style.
Chris Deakin’s side trounced Eastmoor Dragons 70-4 to cement their mid-table place in Division Two of the National Conference League.
Kiel Lancashire led the way, grabbing a hat-trick and converting 11 tries from 12 attempts.
The avalanche of points started in the second minute as man-of-the match Kendal Davies broke away to put Lancashire in at the side of the posts. He goaled his own try.
Five minutes later, both sides were reduced to 12 men temporarily when Craig Highton and Michael Jedynak exchanged blows.
Davies then set up the home side’s second score with another break, offloading to Alan Williamson who, with his path ahead blocked, put in a grubber to the corner for Lancashire to add another six-pointer.
The Wakefield side had no answer to Davies as this time the hooker put Kyle Mayall in at the corner. Lancashire missed his only attempt at goal all afternoon.
Spearheaded by Simon Topping, Carl Fields, Dominic Igoe, Highton and Carter, the Saints pack were superb both in attack and defence.
Five minutes before the break, Davies added his name to the list of try-scorers when he darted over from acting half-back. Lancashire’s conversion made it 28-0 at half time.
Both sides enjoyed an extended interval due to the heat and the crowd had to wait 10 minutes into the second half before the next score.
Eastmoor tried hard to stop the home side’s advance, but the Saints juggernaut was unstoppable as they ran-in four converted tries before the hour mark. Josh Denbeigh, Williamson, Highton with Lancashire all touched down.
When Saints were penalised for crossing, Eastmoor substitute Peter Craven registered his team’s only points. David Sweeney retaliated with a brace, interspersed with a try for Oliver Bryan.
Lancashire added the goals to give Saints their first points since late May.
