Away misery for St Anne’s

RUGBY:
OLDHAM St Anne’s were put on the back foot before their 26-10 National Conference League Division Two defeat at Shaw Cross Sharks.
Saints arrived 10 minutes after the scheduled kick-off time in Dewsbury — at which point it emerged that four of Chris Deakin’s squad were still stuck at Milnrow.
The Sharks took the lead in the sixth minute and a minute later Saints were reduced to 12 men after a yellow card for David Sweeney.
Sharks took advantage of the extra man to run in two converted tries.
Despite the hard graft put in by the Saints front-row forwards, they were unable to break through home defence.
Squires landed a penalty goal on the stroke of half-time to increase Sharks’ lead to 20-0.
Saints, who had four under-18s in their ranks, competed well in the second period and held on until the 65th minute when Squires converted a Casey Johnson try. With 10 minutes remaining, Saints were rewarded when full-back Mick Fogerty broke clear, drew his opposite number before passing the ball to Kiel Lancashire who went in under the posts. He goaled his own try.
Fogerty was at the heart of Saints’ second score three minutes later, chipping through to the corner for Greg Worrall to put down and make the outcome a little more respectable.
THE Division Two table has been updated after Widnes West Bank, who withdrew from the league several weeks ago, had their record expunged.
