Ellis eyes a final flourish for Tonge

Bowls: TONGE may be about to lose their Manchester Premier League title to Chorley outfit St Joseph’s, but they are determined to finish the season on a high.
Tom Ellis’s team had eight winners in their 11-3 (196-159) victory over the Railway, Congleton, with Darren Griffiths (21-8) leading the way.
Other Tonge winners were Dave Crabtree (21-9), Steve Squire (21-13), Gary Ellis (21-15), Nicky Brooks (21-16), Chris Cooke (21-16), Thomas Dobson (21-20) and Gary Smith (21-20).
Tonge are away to the King and Queen, Warrington, next Wednesday.
Thomas Dobson teamed up with his friend, Andy Lowe (Rochdale), to win the Thwaites men’s pairs at Norden BC. They beat Ian Holden and Keith Rudman (Todmorden) 21-6 in the final.
Oldham’s Barry Seville and Steve Mellor lost 21-13 to Holden and Rudman in the quarter-finals.
Heats begin in Norden’s Solar Choice men’s singles on Sunday (6pm).
CROMPTON won the Saddleworth League’s Law Swallow Cup for the third year in a row with victory over Wrigley Mill in the final at Delph.
Losing semi-finalists were Springbank and Whitworth Football and Cricket Club.
Crompton skipper Bob Horrocks received the trophy from league chairman John Blezzard.
