North bid for clean sweep shattered

NORTH Manchester’s hopes of an Oldham and District Golf League double-double were left in tatters when they lost the ‘A’ and ‘B’ cup finals.
The ‘A’ team went down 3-2 to Ashton, while the ‘B’ final saw Stamford exact revenge on the Rhodes-based club for a League play-off final defeat three days earlier.
The cup finals, played at Werneth on Sunday, saw the results in doubt in both matches up to the final pairings on the course.
The ‘B’ final was equally tense, with Stamford posting two early wins before their captain Paul Whitehead clinched the winning point on the 17th green with partner Dwayne Lloyd.
That was in contrast to the league final, played 72 hours earlier at Ashton, in which the two teams were locked together at 4-4 after the four four-ball matches, but North stole victory at the first play-off hole.
North’s ‘A team will look to bounce back from the cup defeat when they take on Stamford for the ‘A’ League title in the play-off final at Dukinfield on Sunday, September 1 (2.30pm).
