Birdie-eagle finish swings it for Mark
Date published: 06 September 2013
MARK Orme produced a wonder finish to clinch the Saddleworth Club Championship.
The 36-year-old birdied the par-four 17th at the Mountain Ash course and then eagled the par-five 18th to claim top honours in the prestigious competition for the first time.
Orme’s stunning closing holes denied his brother, Martin, and Marcus Wray the chance of a play-off.
“I’ve been there or thereabouts for the last three or four years, so to win it was a bit special,” said Mark, who carded gross rounds of 71 and 70 for a 141 total.
“I hit an eight iron to 10 feet on the last hole and canned it.
“Those watching thought I was putting for a birdie and a place in the play-offs, but then I told them it was for eagle.”
Wray and Martin had rounds of 72 and 70 for a 142 gross total.
