Crompton plan rousing finale
Date published: 06 September 2013
CROMPTON may have missed out on promotion to the Lake Garage CLL’s Premier Division, but they remain determined to end the season on a high note.
With a visit to Radcliffe on Sunday followed a week later by a home game against Championship leaders and title favourites Royton, skipper Carl Taylor says his team will be aiming to finish off with two victories.
“Last year we ended the season with five victories, so it would be nice to end this one with a couple,” he said.
“We are really looking forward to the Royton game on the final day as it is nice to be involved in a match in which they will probably be going for the title.
With professional Michael Pote having returned to South Africa, Royton have had to secure stand-in paid men for their last two fixtures.
Tanwir Afzal, a Pakistani who is professional for Settle in the Ribblesdale League, is on duty this weekend.
But it’s the following weekend’s appointment which is loaded with irony.
Heyside pro Gerrie Snyman stood in for the absent Ben Dunk when Royton beat Werneth at the Coppice to put themselves in pole position.
Runs and wickets for the Namibian made a big difference that day, but Snyman – having boosted Royton’s title aspirations – could be the man to end them as he will be playing for Crompton on Sunday week.
