CRICKET: DELPH must win their final game of the season next weekend if they are to better 2012’s fifth-placed finish in the Drakes Huddersfield League Premiership.
That’s because Grant Jones’s men were beaten by Skelmanthorpe on Saturday in their penultimate fixture of 2013.
Opting to take first knock, Delph racked up 179 as Arron Lilley top-scored with a brisk 81 and Kevin Hook contributed 26.
But Skelmanthorpe were always in the hunt in their reply and raced to 180 for five and a fine victory. Lilley took three of the wickets to fall at a cost of 50 runs, but the visitors eased to victory on a miserable day for Delph.
Jones’s men could pip Hoylandswaine to a fourth-placed finish if they beat Honley at home in next Saturday’s final fixture.
DELPH’S Zimbabwe ace Hook broke his ankle while chasing a ball in the field on Saturday.
IT proved to be a disastrous double-header weekend for WOODHOUSES in the Lees Brewery Lancashire County League.
On Saturday – the day Denton West were crowned champions of the league – Woodhouses were crushed by seven wickets at home by Flowery Field.
Batting first, the hosts could only manage 152 all out as Lee Milner took six for 66.
Field raced to their target in reply as Imran Zaman struck an impressive 94.
It got worse yesterday at Woodbank, where Woodhouses batted first and were skittled for a paltry 92. Nick Kennedy took six for 55 for the hosts.
Woodbank cruised to victory as they swiftly reached 93 for the loss of just one wicket.
