Boxing: AFTER a long and distinguished boxing career, Shaw’s Darren Stubbs has turned his focus to training by opening a gym.

Stubbs (41) enjoyed plenty of highs during a professional career of 21 victories in 28 fights, but now hopes to pass some of his skills and experience on to younger hopefuls as head coach at Stubbys Shaw/Royton boxing and training centre, on Trent Mill Industrial Estate, Duchess Street.

The opening night was a huge success, since when classes have been busy across the age ranges.

“I’ve had my time in the limelight now, so I want to give something back to the community,” said Darren. “I want the local kids to come and try boxing and training. So far we’ve been busy, so let’s hope that continues.”

Stubbs’ former manager and trainer Jack Doughty opened the new venture.

Stubbs will have five other coaches working alongside him at his new gym.

A former light-heavyweight boxer, Stubbs - a lorry driver by day – was a 2009 prizefighter tournament runner-up, and also challenged for the English title and the IBO international title.
