GOLF: GLEN Shaw pulled off a stunning comeback to win the Challenge singles knock-out during finals’ day at Werneth.

Four down to club captain James Buckley with five to play, Shaw recorded a birdie at 16 and a nett birdie at 17 before Buckley missed a putt from four feet at the last - which would have clinched victory.

Shaw went on to triumph at the 20th hole.

ASSISTANT professional Andrew Earlam and James Woodcock carried Stamford to victory in the first Manchester and District Alliance meeting of the 2013-14 season at Dunham Forest.
Earlam, who plays off scratch, and eight-handicapper Woodcock pocketed 45 points in the pro-am Stableford format, beating Crompton and Royton assistant Jorden Flint and partner, Manchester DJ Carl Kennedy (42pts).

It was a fitting win as Stamford member Tony Smith was elected captain of the Alliance in August and he was on hand to present the prizes.

SHEILA Whittingham was the ace in the pack at Werneth.
She fired a hole-in-one at the par three 124-yard 10th hole during an English Women’s Golf Association medal competition.

Meanwhile at CROMPTON and ROYTON, Audrey Whittaker, Noreen Nicholson and Jennifer Kenworthy won a Texas Scramble with a score of 80-12-68.
