Fisher defies the elements

Angling: PAUL Fisher defied awful conditions to claim the final Oldham Central AC match of the year at Hampton Springs’ Oasis Lake.

Battered by wind and rain over five hours, Fisher came out on top with a 44lb 6oz net made up of two 10lb carp and plenty of barbel up to 3lb on the pole and pellet at just four metres.

Jim Wiseman has had a cracking season, continued with a second-placed 27lb carp and silvers on pellet at 13 metres.

Wiseman was crowned club champion, with organiser Paul Nield taking runner-up spot.

DAVE Holland (Tri-Cast Highfield) won in the B & J Open match on the vinegar works length of the Rochdale Canal.

His squatt and groundbait approach worked to the tune of 2lb 15oz of small roach.

Joe Lawrence fished his usual worm on the hook and it worked well for a small tench and a few bits that together weighed 2lb 14oz.

TRI-CAST pair James Cantello and grandad Ken Power were again asked to fill in for the Drennan

North-West team fishing the six-man team league on the Northwich lengths of the Trent and Mersey canal.

Last week Cantello did well, winning his section, but this week it was the turn of grandad Power as he topped a star-studded section with 5lb 2oz of bits on long pole and squatt over groundbait from his peg near Farm Road Bridge.

MY latest match was the Slaithwaite Open on their length of the Huddersfield Narrow Canal.

Despite some decent cover, conditions were horrendous with driving rain and blustery winds making fishing uncomfortable.

Martin Blackborough was the winner with half-a-dozen skimmers taken on bread punch down the middle

weighing in 4lb 6oz.

That beat Martin Taylor (Matrix Halifax) into second as he caught six skimmers and some small roach, first on bread punch before switching to squatt and pinkie catching a few small fish that together weighed 3lb 6oz.
