RUGBY:
SADDLEWORTH Rangers’ hopes of survival in National Conference League Division One are all but gone following their 58-12 home defeat at the hands of Rochdale Mayfield.
Rangers led after eight minutes when Gareth Morgan touched down and Mick Coates kicked the goal.
But Lewis Sheridan-goaled tries by Paul Brearley, Matty Moores, Rob Kershaw and Luke Sampson gave Mayfield a commanding 28-6 lead at half-time.
The Morgan-Coates combination struck again early in the second half to reduce Rangers’ deficit to 16 points.
But any chance of a home fightback were snuffed out by Mayfield, who scored further tries from Joe Quanici (2), Sam Butterworth, Sheridan and Sampson. Sheridan was also successful with nine goal attempts.
WATERHEAD remain third from bottom after losing 46-10 against fellow strugglers Dewsbury Celtic.
Mike Foulstone and Josh Sykes had hat-tricks for Celtic, while the Waterhead points came via tries by Matthew Holland and Dale Lowe, plus a conversion by Alex Jobson.
