Simon simply superb

ANGLING: SIMON Castle made it two wins in as many matches when he came out on top in the latest SADAS members-only contest on Eagle Mill Dam.

Drawn on the end peg, Castle fished caster at 13 metres, catching skimmers, roach and bream.

Malc Taylor was second with bream and roach taken on caster and maggot, followed by John Harding’s two chub, tempted by worm, caster and corn all fished together.

Regular money winner on the lake, Brian Murphy, was fourth with an all-roach catch which fell to pellet.

DAVE Holland (Tri-Cast Highfield) is flying high, having won several matches on commercial waters.

He continued that trend with another win at Old Hough Fishery where, drawn on Big Max Lake, he plundered 60lb 5oz of f1s and small tench which all fell to corn fished over pellet at 13 metres.

Dale Richardson was econd with 59lb 11oz of f1s, beating Steve Butler into third with 44lb 9oz of carp.

THE Northern Anglers open attracted 28 competitors and although weights were not massive, everyone caught a pound or more.

John Walker (Little Lever AS) took first place with chopped worm and caster netting him some big perch to weigh in 10lb 7oz. Ged Martin (Tri Cast) was drawn in the same area and caught a similar net to the winner, but fell just short with 9lb 4oz of big perch taken on worm.

JOE Bleakley took first place in the Todmorden AS junior match on the prolific Cornfield Fishery complex. He used chopped worm and caster, netting 14lb 15oz and beating Taylor Varley into second with 13lb 12oz, followed by Jake Nightingale’s pellet-tempted 6lb 5oz.

MY weekend’s fishing was limited to the Saltaire open match fished on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal in and around Shipley.

With sunny conditions and as many walkers as you would see on Blackpool promenade on a summer’s day, it was always going to be low weights and, at the end of the five hours, it proved to be meaner than anyone expected.

Drawn on end peg one, Martin Halliwell (Matrix Halifax) used bread punch and later caster as he caught a succession of roach to around the 8oz mark, finishing with 3lb 13oz.

I managed just over a pound, but must have caught 40 fish for that amount as tiny roach were attracted on squatt and bread punch.
