BOXING: BEN Lancaster’s team of six boxers did his Boarshaw Gym proud when they travelled to Poland for five days for a prestigious amateur tournament.
The Boarshaw fighters – all from Oldham – were invited to Wloclawek, near Warsaw, as the hugely
popular KWB Start Club staged a show as part of its 60th anniversary celebrations.
Of the six Boarshaw representatives, three won and three lost, though all took on the cream of the hosts’ stable. All six opponents were national or regional champions.
Seventeen-year-old Danny Wright, and Jack Kilgannon (18), led the way for Boarshaw, as both won their bouts against Polish national champions.
Mohammed Hamza (16) was also victorious. Joe Eko (20) lost a close bout against a much more experienced opponent, while Marcus Amrooni (33) boxed bravely but was defeated by a fighter who was a five-time Polish champion.
Sixteen-year-old Jack Herbert, making his debut for Boarshaw, gave an excellent account before losing to an experienced opponent.
Head coach Lancaster said: “All in all it was a brilliant five days for the club. We came up against some very strong opponents, but the lads really enjoyed the whole experience.”
