SQUASH:

FAILSWORTH’S Matthew Sidaway says his debut World Championship appearance will be the pinnacle of his short career as a professional.

Sidaway will have to get through two qualifying rounds in Manchester to make sure of a main-draw berth on Monday in the 64-man, $325,000 event.

“I have worked for opportunities like this so it is really exciting,” said Sidaway, the former under-17 national champion, who finished second in the junior rankings.

“I have been full-time on the PSA World Tour for only a few months, but this is the pinnacle for me so far. It is in my home town, I will have my friends and family, so it is a dream come true.

“I am taking one game at a time. I will give everything I’ve got and will keep on running and digging.”

Sidaway says that if he reaches the main draw he would relish the chance to meet and play his hero, James Willstrop, the former world No. 1.

“He has been my all-time idol,” said Sidaway. “I would love to play him and that’s why you chase dreams like this.”
