Chris Tomlinson and Mark Turner halt another Golborne attack
HIGGINSHAW slumped to a 36-0 defeat against an experienced Golborne Parkside outfit in the Upper Division of the North-West Counties League.
Despite the one-sided scoreline, Higgy refused to let their heads drop and never stopped tackling from start to finish on a wet Oldham Edge.
Golborne raced out of the blocks, scoring three tries in the first 13 minutes — two of which were converted — to lead 16-0.
Higgy enjoyed a good, 20-minute spell with Stuart Barry, Garth Brindley and Jordan Hanley making some hard yards towards the visitors’ line.
However, on each occasion they failed to make the pressure count, and the Cheshire side went in again in the 22nd and 26th minutes. With one goal added, they held a clear 26-0 lead at the break.
Higgy threw everything at Golborne in the second half.
Paul Turner, Barry, Scott Frost and Chris Tomlin were outstanding in both defence and attack, while Mark Ward, Jack Hughes and Steve Perry covered every blade of grass as they tried time and again to stem the flow of points.
In the end, Higgy did well to restrict their bigger opponents to 10 points in the second period as they restored some pride with a strong defensive effort.
Brindley was the man-of-the-match for Higgy, who have a blank date this weekend.
