BRAVE Mossley gave a great account of themselves as they slid to an agonising 3-2 defeat at Evo-Stik Division One North table-toppers Warrington Town.
The Lilywhites went toe-to-toe with the big-spending Cantilever Park hosts, only to be downed by a clinical double from Town’s sought-after striker Ciaran Kilheeney.
Ben Wharton handed Warrington the lead after just seven minutes, only for Andy Keogh to swiftly level matters with his first goal of the day minutes later.
Kilheeney bagged the first of his brace on the half-hour mark, but Keogh again replied seconds before half-time to make it 2-2 during what was a thrilling opening period.
Town’s winner came in the 58th minute, with Kilheeney again producing a neat finish.
The Lilywhites slipped a place to 10th in the table, but will take plenty of encouragement into next weekend’s home fixture against high-flying Darlington 1883.
CHADDERTON and OLDHAM BORO were both sent crashing out of the North-West Counties League First Division Challenge Cup at the second-round stage.
Chadderton lost 1-0 at Hanley Town as Josh Thorpe pounced for the only goal just after half-time.
Boro lost 3-0 at ‘home’ against Ashton Town, in a tie switched to their opponents’ ground in Wigan.
Bradley Smart (two) and Tom Jump netted for Ashton.
Chadderton are at home to AFC Darwen tomorrow night in their latest league fixture (7.45pm kick-off).
