GOING STATESIDE . . . Mark Heffron will be training and fighting in America in the New Year
Boxing:
OLDHAM’S exciting middleweight prospect Mark Heffron will be clocking up air miles either side of Christmas.
Heffron (22), younger brother of European title challenger Ronnie, stretched his unblemished professional record to eight wins from eight bouts last weekend when he sent Hungarian hopeful Achilles Szabo spiralling to defeat after 30 seconds.
Heffron, who trains with Joe Pennington at Northside gym, said: “I was buzzing after my win. I caught Szabo with a left hook and then a big body shot and he went over.
“I didn’t expect to win that easily. Szabo has been in with some quality opposition so I was made up with the result.”
Next comes a return trip to Barcelona for a fight on December 14, then after a hectic Christmas he’s off to America on January 15.
“I’m flying to California on January 15 and I’ll be there for five weeks. My promoters over there have sorted me a training camp and a fight, so I can’t wait.”
The trip to Barcelona will see Heffron fighting at the same La Farga venue where he stopped Julio Acosta inside two rounds last month. An opponent for the December 14 date is still being sought.
