Ronnie Heffron: to miss European title fight on Saturday
Boxing:
RONNIE Heffron’s eagerly-awaited challenge for the WBO European light-middleweight title on Saturday has been cancelled.
Oldham star Heffron (23) had trained tirelessly for the fight, due to take place at the Echo Arena in Liverpool against unbeaten home favourite Joe Selkirk.
But Heffron suffered a ligament injury to his left hand during a sparring session last Friday and he was forced to call the fight off.
The Boarshaw Gym ace said: “I’m devastated to be honest. I’ve put so much into my training camp and for this to happen so close to the fight is just gutting.
“It can’t be helped, though. I was going at the pads really hard and I knew straight away something had gone.”
Heffron remains confident that he will get a re-scheduled crack at the title early next year.
