Non-league football: CHADDERTON secured the North-West Counties League First Division derby bragging rights as they crushed Oldham Boro 4-1 at Andrew Street on Boxing Day.

It was a particularly sweet victory for the hosts’ joint management team of Mark Cook and Steve Patterson, as the corresponding fixture exactly a year earlier had seen Boro romp to a thumping 8-2 win.

Cook said: ‘The lads played really well in difficult conditions and thoroughly deserved the three points.”

Niall Sultan and Clive Best handed Chaddy a two-goal half-time lead, only for Stephen Shiel to strike three minutes after the restart.

But Matty Russell notched two more goals in the final 12 minutes to seal a convincing third straight victory for the hosts.

Chaddy and Boro are both back in action on Saturday. Chadderton host Rochdale Town, while Boro travel to Eccleshall.

THE mid-season woes continue for Mossley, who have now lost seven Evo-Stik Division One North games on the spin following a miserable Christmas double-header.

On Boxing Day a double strike from Lewis Nightingale wasn’t enough as the Lilywhites went down 3-2 against Bamber Bridge at Seel Park. Midfielder Dean Warburton was sent off late in the game.

On Saturday Burscough left Seel Park with maximum points thanks to a 2-0 victory.

Luke Robinson and Mike Brown scored, leaving Mossley struggling in 17th place in the table, three clear of the drop zone.

It doesn’t get any easier for joint-managers Peter Band and Lloyd Morrison as the Lilywhites’ next task is a Tameside derby trip to second-placed Curzon Ashton on New Year’s Day.

Six new players have been signed over Christmas.

Nat Kerr (26) is a centre-back signed from Ashton United, while Matthew Carr (21) is a former Droylsden defender. Versatile Matt Tierney (21) is an ex-FC United and Stockport Sports midfielder, and Dutch striker Derryn Ofori (19) has arrived from Hyde FC.

Steve Yarwood (25) is an attacking midfielder signed from Salford City, while 27-year-old Brian Matthews also rejoins Mossley from the same club.
