FOOTBALL:

THERE was a thriller at the top end of the Midas Plumbing and Heating Oldham Sunday League David Giblin Division One as Oldham GPO got the better of second-placed Carrion Crow by the odd goal in seven.

GPO surged into second spot thanks to goals from Mike King (two), Adam Cumpsty and James Uren.

Callum Beckett (two) and Daniel Fitzhugh replied for Carrion Crow.

Limeside Athletic suffered a shock 4-2 home reverse against Springhead Libs ‘A’ as M Garnes, A Newton, D Laryea and I Nield netted for the visitors. Jamie Quinlan and Adam Maksymczuk scored for Limeside.

The only Jack Abbott Premier Division game to survive saw Jolly Carter and Failsworth Athletic contest a 3-3 draw.

Paul Collins (two) and Rob Walton scored for Jolly Carter, while Levi Morris, Niall Sultan and Jack Turnbull replied.

OLDHAM Hulmeians returned to Lancashire Amateur League Division One action for the first time in six weeks, only to lose 2-1 at Tyldesley United.

It was the Maroons’ first defeat in 10 league games, and only their third of the season.

Hulmeians’ goalkeeper Michael Jones made three vital early saves, as the local side struggled to settle into a rhythmn.

Tyldesley were looking to overtake Hulmeians in the league with a win, and they drew first blood in the 25th minute when some slack Hulmeians marking allowed their striker to strike a shot home.

Oldham responded well though, and equalised 10 minutes before the break when Matthew Binns slid in to register his 11th goal of the season.

Hulmeians fell behind on the hour mark after Danny Pauley fouled Tyldesley’s winger and the referee pointed to the spot. The home captain made no mistake, smashing the ball straight down the middle.

Top scorer Ryan Shaughnessy came close to giving the Maroons an undeserved equaliser with an audicious chip from 20 yards, but the home goalkeeper was equal to the task.
