AFC Oldham 2005 moved eight points clear at the top of the Lancashire and Cheshire League’s Premier Division following victory against Moston Brook at the Tameside Stadium.
Oldham manager Paul Marshall said: “We have never had a better chance of winning the league than this year. We are in a better position than this time last season and we have only lost once in the league.
It is a congested top flight and, although Marshall’s side sits comfortably in pole position, the title looks set to be contested by several clubs.
Third-placed Whalley Range have a massive five games in hand on Oldham, while Rochdalians, who are seventh, have six games in hand. Both sides could overtake Oldham.
But judging by this impressive win against fellow challengers Moston, Oldham look a good bet to claim the title. Goals from Callum Franklin – from the penalty spot – Andrew Stafford and Heap secured Oldham a 3-0 lead by the hour mark.
Two spot-kicks in quick succession, however, enabled Moston to narrow the deficit and, with just 10 minutes remaining, things became a little nervy in the Oldham camp.
So it was that the outstanding Buckley, with a rasping 20-yard drive, ensured that maximum points went to Marshall’s men.
HEAVY morning rain meant the AFC Oldham game was one of only two last weekend.
Revamped Chorltonians cruised to a 4-1 win at basement team Hooley Bridge Celtic.
