FOOTBALL:

NATHAN Boote bagged a superb four-timer as Diggle crushed Scholes 5-1 in the Huddersfield FA Challenge Cup.

The hosts soon got into their stride, and striker Boote broke the deadlock mid-way through the first half as he neatly tucked a shot away. Boote doubled Diggle’s tally just before the break with another fine strike.

After the restart, Diggle carried on where they’d left off, constantly dominating play and threatening the Scholes rearguard.

Boote grabbed two more goals to take his and the team’s tally to four, before fellow striker Matt Taylor weighed in with an effort to make it 5-0. Scholes netted a consolation strike in the dying minutes.

Diggle now face an away tie at West Riding Premier outfit Storthes Hall in the next round on February 15.



RIFLE Range ‘A’ fired themselves to the top of the Midas Plumbing and Heating Oldham Sunday League Jack Abbott Premier Division thanks to a 5-2 win at Crompton House Old Boys.

The goals were spread around for Range, with Danny O’Donnell, Ryan Hobin, Leighton Stephenson, Carl Beamish and Gareth Hill on target.

The Old Boys’ consolation efforts came from Nathan Eastmond and Lee Mallitt.

Fitton Hill Rangers secured a morale-boosting 8-2 top-flight victory at Jolly Carter.

On the mark were Darren Scanlon (two), Danny Iberson, Ian Knapman, Callum Franklin, Aaron Murdoch, Paul Badby and Roy Radcliffe.

Darren Walsh and Rob Walton scored for Jolly Carter.



Heyside lost ground in the Huddersfield League Division Two promotion race as they went down 1-0 at joint-leaders Holmfirth Town.

After an even first period, the hosts broke the deadlock five minutes before the break.

A man-of-the-match effort from the hosts’ goalkeeper kept Heyside at bay in the second half.

Heyside’s second string paid the price for missing too many chances when going down 2-0 to Reserves Division Two promotion hopefuls Shelley.



THE heavy rain relented enough to allow a virtually full mixed programme of Lancashire and Cheshire League matches to go ahead.

There was a big shock in the Rhodes Cup competition as Old Stretfordians put out holders and Premier Division leaders AFC Oldham by the odd goal in five.

Reigning Premier Division champions Whalley Range had no cup commitments and they continued their chase of Oldham with a 7-1 crushing of Old Ashtonians.

Division One action saw Santos beat Stoconians 6-4, while there were also goals galore in Division Three as Oldham Victoria edged out Castleton seconds 5-4.



SPRINGHEAD produced a sublime second-half performance as they destroyed second-placed Stockport Georgians 5-1 in the FBT Manchester League Premier Division.

The game was goalless at half time, although ’Head had created the better of the chances, with Ryan Fagan seeing his effort saved superbly by the Georgians ’keeper.

The second half saw ’Head dominate as they cut open their opponents with some fine football.
