Mayall’s Area title incentive

BOXING: ASHLEY Mayall has been promised a tilt at the Central Area light-welterweight title — as long as he beats tough opponent ‘Dirty’ Dan Carr at the Oldham Sports Centre on March 8.

Oldham favourite Mayall (23) has won four of his seven bouts as a pro, and promoters have earmarked him for a Central Area crack after he impressed hugely in his last fight in November.

At the Copper Box Arena in London, St Mary’s-based Mayall beat Chris Evangelou, a man with high hopes having won nine of his first 11 fights.

“People must have been impressed with that performance,” said Mayall. “So I’ve been told now that if I come through my fight against Carr in Oldham without any dramas, I’ll then be on a bill at the Liverpool Echo Arena the following Saturday, where I’d fight Robbie Davies jnr in a 10-rounder for the Central Area title.

“This gives me a great incentive to beat Carr now. Not only will it be brilliant fighting in front of my home-town fans again, I’ve got a title bid to focus on too.”

FAILSWORTH’S junior ABA champion Danny Wright suffered area quarter-final disappointment at the England Boxing Youth Championships.
At the Walkden Sports Centre, Boarshaw Gym starlet Wright (17) was up against tough opponent Kieran Conway from the East Midlands-based Kings Heath club in the 64kg class.

Wright came up just short, losing a split-decision from the judges after three exciting three-minute rounds.
