TABLE TENNIS: GROTTON ‘A’ are giving it their all in trying to avoid the drop from Division Two in the Oldham and District Table Tennis League.

A 6-4 win over their Unison counterparts helped their cause. Lionel Royle led the way with a hat-trick, while Dave Morris and Steve Oliver scored one victory apiece.

It was an important success for Grotton as Pennine, who are immediately below them in the table, secured a surprise 6-4 win over third-placed Saddleworth ‘C’.

Glen Chadwick and Glen Dowse had doubles and John Robertson one. Duncan Hadfield was unbeaten for Saddleworth, but his efforts were in vain.

The battle for second place in Division One is hotting up, with three teams in with a shout.
Saddleworth ‘A’ slipped to third after they lost 6-4 to top-of-the-table Glodwick ‘A’.

Jeff Craighill (three) Mark Ramsbottom (two) and young Amirul Hussain did the damage.

This result allowed Hollinwood ‘A’ to go second courtesy of a 7-3 success over Werneth ‘A’. Barry Elliott (three) Gabriel Wilding (two) and Colin Boardman were the main men for Hollinwood.

The game between Barry Elliott and Darryl Meredith was described as “cracking” and “memorable” — just what you expect from these top players.
