Non-league football: MOSSLEY put in a spirited effort at Evo-Stik Division One North play-off chasers Lancaster City, but slipped to a scarcely-deserved 2-1 defeat.

The Lilywhites matched their loftier opponents for long spells at the Giant Axe, but missed a number of late chances to equalise on a frustrating afternoon.

After an evenly-matched first half, prolific Lancaster striker Jordan Connerton slotted the hosts into the lead two minutes before the break.

Barely 60 seconds into the second period, striker Richard Bennett hauled the Lilywhites level, only for the hosts to bag what turned out to be the winning goal nine minutes later.

This time Gavin Clark notched the finish to beat relatively untroubled Mossley ’keeper Christian Thewlis.

The Lilywhites – who slipped to 16th place in the table – are back in action tonight when they travel to a New Mills side who are just a place below them (7.45pm kick-off).

OLDHAM BORO secured a morale-boosting 1-0 away victory at sixth-placed Atherton LR in the

North-West Counties League First Division.

Adam Alwill bagged the crucial goal just before half-time. Boro will hope to build on that result when they host Ashton Town tonight (7.45pm kick-off).

CHADDERTON were without a fixture on Saturday. They return to action tomorrow night with a home game against Hanley Town (7.45pm).
