Mail knock-out for Werneth quintet

GOLF:
WERNETH exited the Mail on Sunday competition in the second round after losing 3-2 at Romiley.
Les Dooley won 3&2 for the Garden Suburbs club, who also had halves from Mark Abbott (giving three shots) and Lee Rowbotham (giving two shots).
Paul Rowbotham and Chris Cordwell were beaten 3&2 and 4&3 respectively against a good side on an excellent course.
At Crompton and Royton, Pete Boggiano, Lee Conway, Dave Whitworth and Paul Harrison took top spot in the latest round of the Winter League.
They shot 15 under par, helped by Conway’s superb start of birdie, birdie, eagle!
The quartet was three shots clear of Maurice Nicholson, Jim Booth, Roy Denson and Ian Boulter, who were runners-up after a card play-off from Steve Moores, Chris Calow, Ryan O’Leary and Andy Bottomley.
SADDLEWORTH women played an Odds and Evens Stableford and the four of Denise Brown, Linda Kenworthy, Fiona Hesten and Debra Cockburn were 20 points clear with their huge haul of 104 points.
OLDHAM GEMS played a betterball pairs Stableford and first past the post with 25 points were Gordon Howard and Geoff Beard, two more than Peter Schofield and Steve Smith, and Brian and Geoff Allen.
