RUGBY: OLDHAM St Anne’s ‘A’ team bowed out of the North-West Men’s League Challenge Trophy with a 26–14 defeat at Bury Broncos.
The hosts took advantage of playing down the steep slope, and within the first 15 minutes had put 14 points on the board. Scrum-half Neil Shacklorth kicked a field-goal for a 17-6 lead at half-time for Broncos.
Saints, from Division Two, fell further behind five minutes into the second half.
Shacklorth launched a high ball to the corner and it landed kindly for Charlie Delaume to touch down.
Saints managed two unconverted tries by Kiel Lancashire and Richard Adams to make the score more respectable, but the Broncos made certain of the next round.
Elsewhere in the competition, Fitton Hill Bulldogs conceded a 24-0 defeat at Pilkington Recs ‘A’.
IN the preliminary round of the NWML Shield, Higginshaw were shown the exit door after they failed to fulfil the fixture at Wigan St Cuthbert’s ‘A’, who were also handed a 24-0 victory.
