Oldham sunk in thrilling clash
Date published: 28 March 2014
THE top two teams in the Lancashire and Cheshire League Premier Division produced a classic encounter as leaders AFC Oldham were beaten 3-2 by reigning champions Whalley Range, who are seeking a sixth successive title.
In dire weather conditions both teams showed their quality in a game which was well handled by referee Joe Perselli.
Range were quickly on the front foot and took the lead with a penalty from Connor Downes.
Oldham responded well to level before the break with a tap-in from the outstanding Aaron Murdock.
After 50 minutes Oldham took the lead with a good finish from Callum Franklin.
But Range stepped up the pace and two fabulous finishes from John Murphy and Pete Carley regained the lead and they withstood some late pressure to record a vital 3-2 win.
Oldham are now 14 points clear of Range, who have a massive seven games in hand as the chase for the title continues.
Moston Brook dropped into third place after being held 2-2 by South Manchester.
