Saints go marching on

RUGBY:

OLDHAM St Anne’s were again formidable as they swept aside hosts Stanley Rangers 36-20 in Division Two of the Kingstone Press National Conference League.

The victory maintained Saints’ 100 per cent record — four out of four — and it was also their first success in four attempts at Lee Moor Road.

Rangers elected to play down the slope in the first half in the hope of wearing down the visitors.

But Saints produced some stunning rugby and went ahead in the 15th minute, Mick Diveney passing to Craig Highton to go in under the posts. Kiel Lancashire converted.

At the end of the first quarter, Rangers full-back Joel Marsh finished a move instigated by Danny Sampson, who went over on the half-hour mark. With a conversion, the Wakefield side went 10-6 ahead.

Two minutes after taking the lead, Nathan Jewitt collected the ball on his own line, raced up the left flank and offloaded for Josh Denbeigh to squeeze in at the corner and tie the game.

Two tries in four minutes either side of the break by Alan Williamson, the first converted by Carl Sneyd, gave Saints a 10-point advantage.

The game was put to bed before the hour mark with Lancashire taking on the Rangers defence before offloading to Denbeigh.

John Deakin barged his way through a gap to send in Saints man-of-the-match Jordan White under the posts. Lancashire landed both goals.

More points followed and the result was never in doubt. Saints now sit second in the table on points difference behind leaders Kells..
