GOLF: NEW Werneth captain Paul Gough is hoping he can one day shed his ‘nearly man’ tag.

The 13-handicapper was as low as nine at one stage, but has repeatedly paid the price for consistency in the club’s majors.

“I have been close on a few occasions,” said the Garden Suburb 53 year old. “But I kept getting my handicap cut for finishing second and I haven’t been able to win one.”

Time is still on the side of Paul, who is married to Karen and has a daughter, Kieghley (25), and son Anthony (20). The captaincy will take precedence over competing this year, and Paul plans to get involved in all sections of the club.

He will also raise money for the Christie mobile chemotherapy unit in memory of popular Werneth member Jane Fletcher who died last year.

“The unit has been set up for those people who can’t get out to the hospital and we will be dedicating our efforts in memory of Jane and other members of the club who have passed away,” he said.

Paul hopes to schedule a golf day and race night to support the cause.

Paul has been a member at Werneth for 15 years and has seen the club lose members in common with all other golf clubs in these difficult economic times. Encouragingly, the club made a small profit last year.
