CRICKET: SHAW moved quickly to snap-up record-breaking professional batsman Ather Abid after a deal to register South African Lerato Kgoatle fell through.
The 33-year-old Pakistani, a former under-19s international, is expected to make his debut against Droylsden on Saturday, and complements a first XI which features another Holebottom Clough new boy, Lachlan Mason.
Abid has lots of experience playing across the North West. He rewrote the Lostock CC record books in 2009 when he smashed 233 off 138 balls against Bolton in the Manchester and District Association - the highest individual score in the club’s history.
He completed his move to the Saddleworth and District League at the 11th hour after Shaw discovered a hold-up in Kgoatle’s paperwork.
Mason, from Australia, scored 563 runs for Clifton in the Central Lancashire League Premier Division last season, at an average of 23.46.
The 21 year old stepped off the plane only hours before his first game for Shaw last weekend and made four.
SPRINGHEAD and Failsworth Macedonia suffered defeats on the opening day of the North Manchester Cricket League Division One season.
Springhead lost by 67 runs at Ashton Ladysmith, while Failsworth succumbed by 84 runs at East Lancashire Paper Mill.
