PLAYERS from Hollinwood and Stayley have booked their places for round two of the Saddleworth and District Cricket League's Tanner Cup competition.
While those clubs in Oldham and the surrounding areas must now ponder a week of racing around to meet 6.30pm starts, the league’s furthest outposts at Whalley Range and Wythenshawe managed to complete their ties yesterday.
Hollinwood's contest at Wythenshawe was delayed for half-an-hour but when play got underway, the visitors posted 220 for six from 45 overs.
Wythenshawe made a good start in reply, with openers Jason Warner (48) and Lewis Crowther (36) adding 104 in 26 overs. But both departed in quick succession and the home side's resistance slowly crumbled. Wythenshawe completed their overs on 201 for eight
Skipper Ronnie Cameron recorded figures of three for 14 from four overs as Stayley restricted Whalley Range to 160 for seven.
Stayley were pushed all the way for runs and eventually achieved victory off the third ball in the final over.
The ties at Moorside, Micklehurst, Heyside, Glodwick, Austerlands and Uppermill get under way tonight, weather and fitness of grounds permitting.
In the only Moore Cup tie to go ahead, Uppermill reached South West Manchester’s target of 103 with four wickets to spare. The other seven matches start tonight at 6.30pm.
