GOLF:

WERNETH produced a winning treble in the Manchester Alliance knock-out competitions, beating Flixton’s Acre Gate 7-0 in the flagship Dunham Forest Trophy.

But even that was overshadowed by away wins — tough to achieve in golf — in beating Bramhall 4-1 in the seniors (over-55) and Turton 4-3 in the Archie Preston mixed foursomes.

In the Dunham, Liam Dwayre made a winning debut (5 & 4) while there were also successes for Chris Cordwell (2 & 1), Lee Rowbotham (7 & 5), Adam Rowbotham (3 & 2), Paul Rowbotham (1up), Jack Suttie (3 & 2) and James Matterson, who received a walk-over as Acre Gate did not field a professional.

The Archie Preston success was a re-run of Werneth’s glory moment when they beat Turton in the final of the competition in 2012.

This time, they won 4-3 with last pairing Suttie and Glynis Jones clinching victory with the last putt on the final green.

Werneth’s other winners were captain Paul Gough and lady-captain Patricia Grant (2 & 1), Paul Rowbotham and Brenda Martin (2 & 1) and Shaun Rattigan and Fiona Dooley (3 & 2).

And in the seniors, there were wins for John Barlow and John Martin (5 & 4), Quentin Cartwright and Terry Wroe (5 & 4), Hugh Adams and Les Jones (3 & 2), and John Armstrong and Paul Walker (2 & 1).

TORRENTIAL rain washed out five matches on the opening week of the Oldham and District Golf League season.

But ‘A’ Section reigning champions Stamford splashed their way to a 7-1 win over Saddleworth in the new-look East Division.

Crompton and Royton were delighted with four points in a draw at Fairfield, where captain Andy Bottomley clinched the share of the spoils with a 25-foot putt for a last-green win with partner Andy Clarke. Brad Canning and Andy Frizzell succeeded by the same slender margin.

In the West Division, Brookdale were not disgraced as they lost 5-3 at North Manchester — two of the defeats came on the last green.
