FIRST it rained for three days at Warren Lane - and then it was too bright.

The Glodwick v Droylsden Tanner Cup tie was held up by the setting sun last night. Glodwick captain Nigel Stock explained: “Droylsden opening batsman Michael Schofield was struggling to see as the sun was going down behind the trees. It was pretty tough to field for a while as well, so the umpires took the players off.

“Low sun stopped play was a first for me; we must have lost 15-20 minutes due to it.”

The first-round clash was expected on Sunday, but heavy showers kept the game at bay for three days.

Because only 32 overs were possible, players and officials face returning for another two nights before a conclusion is reached.

Droylsden resume their innings on 137 for four, with Schofield unbeaten on 40. Abdul Chand earlier made 57, while professional Rehan Rafiq’s figures so far read two for 17 from half-a-dozen overs.

Two of last night’s games were played to a finish.

Pro Grant Hodnett continued his hot streak by smashing 85 not out as Moorside chased down Shaw’s target of 126 with nine wickets to spare at Turf Pit Lane.

Friarmere crumbled to 51 all out in reply to Heyside’s 157 at Little Hey Street. Scott Bloor bagged four for 17 from nine overs and Danny Cashin picked up two for seven off six.

Austerlands continue on 188 for seven with four overs remaining of their innings at home to Saddleworth, who fought back well.

The hosts, for whom pro Asif Zakir (65), Adam Sunderland (47) and Mohammed Naveed (44) were among the runs, were 164 for two before wickets tumbled late on.

Babar Naeem hit 87 out of Greenfield’s 297 for nine at Micklehurst.

Nick Lawrence claimed six for 85 off eight overs for Micklehurst, who start their reply to tonight.

Matches get under way at 6.30pm.
