Watters a hero for Tonge

BOWLS: DAVE Watters produced a match-winning 21-2 performance as Tonge won 9-6 at reigning Manchester Premier League champions St Joseph’s of Chorley. Watters’ display sealed the three aggregate points, Tonge prevailing 177-169.
Other winners for the local outfit were Gary Ellis (21-12), Steve Squire (21-12) and Thomas Dobson (21-17).
Second-placed Tonge host table-topping Lloyds (Chorlton) next Wednesday (7.30pm).
In-form Ellis won the Allens Green Open at Radcliffe for the fourth time when he defeated his friend, Paul Dudley, 21-19 in a tense final.
In the semi-finals, Ellis saw off Preston’s Simon Coupe 21-17, while Dudley defeated Andrew Cairns 21-11. Ellis picked up £500 to add to his early-season gains.
STEVE Mellor and Maxine Fisher, Paul Heap and partner, and V and M Jones provide plenty of Oldham interest in the heats of the Brennan Paving mixed pairs competition at Royton on Sunday (5.30pm).
GREATER Manchester juniors enjoyed a convincing victory over Cumbria in their opening match of the season.
The home team, playing at the Hyde Club, won 236-124, while the away side had a 223-156 verdict at North Scale, Barrow.
The next BCGBA junior competition is the President’s Trophy at Tonge on Sunday (1pm).
GREATER Manchester women take on North Lancashire and Fylde on Sunday (2pm).
The home leg is at North Chadderton Social and Bowling Club and the team will be captained by Springbank’s Alma Tickle.
Other local players involved are Eileen Dawson, Rachel Fish and Karen Houlston (Delph), Karen Hughes and Chris Kewley (Springbank), Diane Fish (Royton Cricket), Ann Burgess (Coalshaw Park) and Michelle Millward (Dunwood Park).
SPRINGBANK’S Steve Squire is in the Greater Manchester Parks away side which will take on their Yorkshire counterparts at Eccleshill BC, Bradford, on Sunday (2pm)..The home leg is at Metro Sports Club, Stretford.
