Riley and Booth find the key to majors

GOLF: MARK Riley shot two superb sub-par rounds to win the Spring Cup, Brookdale’s first major of the year.
Three-under-par after the first round, two handicapper Riley held it together to finish on a nett 132, four strokes below par.
Second was Charlie Clough (145-6x2-133), with Steve Boyle (143-4x2-135) back in third.
Peter McQulliam took first-round honours with 83-15-68, and he was followed by Dave Salt (80-12-68) CPO, and Andy Bennett (82-14-68).
Round two winner was Neil Trolan, who carded 74-8-66 to finish ahead of Gary Smith (73-6-67) and John Strachan (75-7-68).
Pete Buckley took the best gross prize over the two days with rounds of 78 and 72.
There was also major action at Crompton and Royton where James Booth won the Seven Cup with a round of 78-10-68.
A junior member last year when he lost the chance of landing his first major in a play-off, Booth has just turned 18 and to win a club major at such a tender age is a fine achievement.
Runner-up to Booth was Tony Schimelt, who carded 81-12-69 to beat Vic Smith (86-17-69) in a card play-off.
