Lee has the last laugh

GOLF: WERNETH ‘A’ team captain Lee Rowbotham found himself on the wrong end of a birdie blitz at Saddleworth . . . and left Mountain Ash delighted!

He and partner Mark Wareing were hammered 6 & 5 despite being three under for the 13 holes as home-club captain Andy Dunster and Nicky Marner were an impressive nine under!

But Rowbotham had the last laugh as his team claimed a valuable and rare away win with a 5-3 scoreline.

Jonny Wilde and Les Dooley won 4 & 3, Michael Farrimond and Mark Routledge had success on the final green, and it could have been even better for the visitors as Chris Cordwell and James Buckley were pegged back from two up with three to play for a half.

Crompton and Royton’s unbeaten record is intact after they followed last week’s away draw with a 5-3 home win over reigning champions Stamford.

In the West Division, it was home wins all the way with Denton setting the early pace after whitewashing North Manchester.

In the ‘B’ Section East, Saddleworth captain John Walsh and partner Dave Newman earned a win on the final green to clinch a 4-4 draw at Werneth.

And Crompton and Royton shocked Stamford with a 6-2 win at the Staley venue.

In the West, Dukinfield were busy playing two away games in a week to accommodate the extra club and followed up a 4-4 draw at Castle Hawk with a productive 6-2 win at Oldham.
