SMART ALEX . . . Greenfield skipper Alex Peters celebrates his recent century against Heyside.
CRICKET: GREENFIELD all-rounder Peter Gill is hoping to sleep soundly tomorrow night.
The wily campaigner, already approaching 30 wickets for the season, reported waking with nightmares after the tied game against Hollinwood last weekend.
Reduced to 80 for seven chasing a target of 168, Greenfield were seemingly heading for defeat in the league clash at Lime Lane.
The combination of Gill, Mike Moore, John Wood and Jon Mayor then dug in and managed to level the scores for the loss of one more wicket, with only three balls remaining.
There was another twist in the tale as Hollinwood roared back to claim the last two wickets for no more runs.
“It was a strange mixture of relief and disappointment,” said Peters (22), who is again missing professional Chris Gill this weekend because of a hamstring injury. “From looking at two or three bonus points at best, we then had the win in our grasp.
“The eight points from the tie as well as the bonus points isn’t a bad return, though, especially from the predicament we found ourselves in.”
Greenfield face a double-header weekend. They visit Droylsden tomorrow and play host to Fulwood and Broughton (Palace Shield) in round one of the LCB Cup on Sunday.
