Boxing: ANTHONY Crolla has begun his homework as he gears up for a potential world lightweight title shot.

Chadderton-based Crolla (27) thrust himself right into the world title mix in April when he stopped former contender and lifelong pal John Murray in the 10th round of a breathtaking ‘Battle of Manchester’ clash at the Arena.

Post-fight, Crolla’s promoter Eddie Hearn effectively promised the former British champion a world title tilt within two fights.

WBO inter-continental champ Crolla is now busy back in training with Joe Gallagher in Bolton, and an exciting remainder of 2014 looks to be in prospect.

‘Million Dollar’ said: “I’ve spoken to Eddie and he's looking at getting me back in the ring around late August or September. That’s either going to be for a world title or if not, an eliminator for one of the big belts.

“Abril, Burns, Vazquez, (WBC champion) Omar Figueroa – whoever I may eventually fight, I’ve already started studying them. These would be huge fights, and if one of them did come off, it would be a dream come true.”

Two years ago, Crolla’s career took a nosedive when he was beaten – at Oldham Sports Centre – by Scouser Derry Matthews when the British title was on the line.

Crolla had previously met Matthews and only drawn, so some punters are calling for a third match-up against the experienced 30-year-old. But Crolla is now ranked seventh by the WBO, while Matthews is now well down the world rankings.

“I’m sure it would be a great fight, but there would be nothing in it for me to be taking him on at this point,” said Crolla.
